In April 1942, the RAF tested the Allison powered P-51A Mustang Mk.I and found its performance inadequate at higher altitudes. With a Rolls Royce Merlin 61 engine installed its performance was transformed and North American began producing the definitive P-51D powered by the license built Packard V-1650-3 Merlin.
